1) Please introduce yourself. Hi. I’m Gayle Louise Opada-Villarmea, 41 years old and with me here in South Korea are my husband, Karl James Villarmea and my 7-year old twin boys, Kei Gabriel and Keiji Gavin. 2) Where is your working place back in your country and what is your specialty? Back in the Philippines, I am practicing both as a Dermatologist and Dermatopathologist in my own private clinic, G.L.O. Medical Specialists Clinic, located in Dumaguete City, 360 kilometers south of Manila. 3) How did you get to know Severance? Why did you choose Severance as your training hospital? I got to know Severance Hospital through my dermatology consultant at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) in Manila, Philippines who introduced me to my present mentor, Professor Kee Yang Chung. I chose this prestigious institution as my training hospital because of the highly skilled professors who can mentor, the wealth of cases that I can encounter, and the world class facilities that I will be able to use and learn from. All of which I hope, and all the things I will learn, I can bring to my home country. 4) How long is your training period in Korea? My formal hands-on training is 1 year. But before this, we still have to undergo a 1-month Prime course and a 3-month observation period. That brings it to a total of 16 months. 5) Which area did you focus on during your fellowship at Severance? My fellowship is focused on Dermatologic Surgery, specifically Mohs micrographic surgery. My supervisor is Professor Kee Yang Chung. 6)What is the most impressive feature of Severance Hospital? Yonsei Severance Hospital is one of the three hospitals in South Korea that has a Melanoma team and the only one in Seoul. It is also one of the top five biggest hospitals in the country. Severance hospital has a lot of patients and numerous skin cancer cases for me to learn from in my specific field of study. 7)What are the specific contents of your fellowship program at Severance? My fellowship training focuses on Dermatologic surgery, specifically using the Mohs micrographic surgery technique, where we have to remove surgically the skin cancer with normal skin borders and check the margins in the microscope if there is no skin cancer left before closing it by reconstructive surgery. 8)If you were to get the chance to come back, which field of clinical study would you like to focus on? If I were given a chance to come back, I will still choose Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) technique and focus more on Acral melanoma MMS since it is the most common melanoma in Asians. And maybe add Negative pressure technique in the post-op wound management. 9)Who are you most thankful for at Severance(who helped you the most) & why? I am very thankful to my professor, Prof. Kee Yang Chung and his very efficient nurse, Miss Nam. They really went out of their way to help me maximize my training. They provided me with materials to practice before hands-on training, patiently taught me from the smallest detail of holding the surgical knife, to the angle of the blade when cutting to the holding of sutures when closing. They also went out of their way to help me even with matters that concern outside the hospital. 10)What was your first impression of Korea? My first impression is that Korea is amazingly advanced when it comes to technology. Severance Hospital has world-class facilities and is superior when it comes to treatment of patients. 11)What is the best memory so far during your stay here? Aside from my fellowship training which is for me the best and will be the best memory for me and for my family, the one-month Prime course is actually one that I will consider as one-of the-best because I got to know other fellow international doctors and created friendships with them. I am also thankful we had a Korean language class before starting our fellowship. It did help a lot not just in communicating with patients in the hospital but also outside the hospital.

1) Please introduce yourself. My name is Asfa Najmi Mohamad Yusof. I'm 39 years old. I have a big family consisting of my mother and six other siblings. 2) Where is your working place back in your country and what is your specialty? Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) is my workplace. It is a tertiary center located in Sarawak, Malaysia and also, SGH is a teaching hospital collaborating with University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). I am an Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) surgeon and my subspecialty of interest is Otology and lateral skull base surgery. 3) How did you get to know Severance? Why did you choose Severance as your training hospital? I knew about Severance from my senior colleagues who completed their international fellowship training. In addition, I attended a symposium, Yonsei Endoscopic Ear Surgery 2020 in Severance. The massive modern design hospital caught my eye. At the time, I met Professor In Seok Moon in person, and he was pleasant and enthusiastic about working with international students. Therefore, I chose Severance as my fellowship training center at the start. 4) How long is your training period in Korea? The training period is nine months, from 1st February 2022 until 31st October 2022. 5) Which area did you focus on during your fellowship at Severance? My training supervisor is Professor In Seok Moon. I focus on Otology and lateral skull base surgery training. 6) What is the most impressive feature of Severance Hospital? Most people agree that Severance is a world-class sophisticated medical center specializing in robotic surgery. However, I believe that this hospital provides a pre-training program, SIF-PC, that can help international physicians to participate in hands-on medical practice is fantastic. The eagerness to move forward globally by sharing clinical experience is an excellent opportunity and is rarely available in other medical centers. The SIF-PC has a limited slot, but participants will receive substantial rewards. I'm glad I was one of the participants in the program! 7) What are the specific contents of your fellowship program at Severance? The specific training program contents are; Daily surgical training in the operating room (major and minor surgeries), Weekly outpatient department clinics, case conferences, neurotology, auditory implant, and vestibular research meetings. In addition, participation in seminars, symposiums, temporal bone dissection, and skull base dissection courses. Involvement in clinical research in Otology is also part of the program. The fellowship program focuses on exposure regarding the treatment capabilities in Otology and skull base diseases with various surgical exposure in endoscopic ear surgery and lateral skull base surgery. 8) What was your first impression of Korea? Korea has developed rapidly with technological advances that amazed me. However, living in a modern country, Koreans never forget their roots. They are culturally and patriotically rich. The ancient heritages are well preserved. The Korean’s attitude makes my jaw drop. Organized, efficient, polite, kind, and physically fit are the words that I can describe to most Koreans. They are pretty friendly, despite sometimes not knowing what they are talking about, as the majority of them speak in their native tongue. The public transportation system is excellent accessibility and punctuality, which I love most! 9) What is the best memory so far during your stay here? Aside from my hands-on Otology training in Severance which is the best experience so far, I was able to experience the brief blooming period of cherry blossoms in the spring. I felt fortunate to be around the perfect moment to see the full-blown flowers in the most popular place. Seeing the flowers made my heart bloom and overflow with joy. The recent trip to Jeju was breathtaking. The views are spectacular. Learning the Korean language is a pleasant and continuing effort. I'm proud of myself for recently getting a discount in Dongmun Market, despite my limited Korean language skills. 10) Who are you most thankful for at Severance (who helped you the most) & why? Professor In Seok Moon, my training supervisor, deserves the highest compliment. He is a bright and skilled Otology and skull base surgeon. The way he does the surgery is effortless. When he strongly recommends hands-on practice, I can tell he is a dedicated and passionate mentor. Despite his vast experience, he is a humble person. He is easily approachable and answers my questions regardless of his busy schedule. He guided me throughout my training, especially at the beginning, and made me feel at ease in this unfamiliar place. He often encourages me to explore new places and foods in Korea. He tries to understand and respect my culture, especially when it comes to halal food; I feel overwhelmed. 11) If you were to get the chance to come back, which field of clinical study would you like to focus on? I'll concentrate on the same clinical area, Otology. Otology is a broad field that I hope to enhance my knowledge and apply in my center. Apart from refining my basic Otology and lateral skull base surgery skill, I do like to learn more about surgical techniques for microtia. However, due to the rarity of microtia incidence and the surgery, gaining skills in such a short period is difficult. Also, focusing on auditory implant surgery and vestibular disorder management would be beneficial. 12)Please describe a special/troublesome experience you went through because of COVID19 during your fellowship. I feel blessed to make it here in the end after going through some difficult times. The rules were strict when I initially arrived in this country. Before training, I spent ten days in quarantine and had several COVID-19 (PCR) tests. Around mid-March 2022, the highest peak of COVID-19 new cases was 600K per day. Fortunately, SIF-PC was an entirely online course for the whole month of March. Nonetheless, this critical period was stressful and worrisome, particularly when I was concerned about becoming sick in a foreign country. Thankfully, the number of cases is reducing every day.

I come to Severance to train about surgical and medical retina. 2) What is the most impressive feature of Severance Hospital? I think the most impressive feature of Severance Hospital is the hospitality. I observed that all the professors and health workers in Severance are very kind, patience and helpful to the patients. Regardless of how busy they are, they still take time to explain the patients very carefully and encourage the patients to ask any questions that related to their health. One more point is Severance hospital have a very high standard of cleanliness, everywhere is so clean: operation room, outpatient department rooms, bathroom, fellow room, restaurant, waiting room, are all very clean. 3) What are the specific contents of your fellowship program at Severance? I come here to train in retina field, both surgical and medical part. Retina is the inner most, thin layer of tissue that lines at the back of the eye. I attend the surgery and clinical follow by my professor schedule. As this time, I get the chance to study about retina I hope that next time I can learn different part such as oculoplastic, cornea or glaucoma. 4) What was your first impression of Korea? My impression about Korea is that everyone works very hard and very fast with responsibility. On the street is hardly find the trash, everywhere is so clean. people wearing mask everywhere, and everyone respected the rule. Transportation is the best by subway and buses, so it makes us really comfort to go anywhere. Bicycle renting is available almost everywhere in Seoul. 5) What is the best memory so far during your stay here? One of the best memories is when I got a chance to spend time with other fellow from other countries. I got many foreign friends who also currently training in Severance hospital and few of them already left to their own countries. We went to hiking, shopping and gym together once awhile. As we come from different countries, we have our own language, but we use English as a language to communicate with each other while we are in Korea. Sometimes we share and talk about our own culture and costumes. 6) Who are you most thankful for at Severance (who helped you the most) & why? First, I would like to say thanks to the directors and all staffs at medical mission center for helping me with the documents and other stuffs since before I arrived in Korea. And thanks to Stephanie for her hard work related to my documents. And thanks to all retina professors at eye hospital for teaching me and guiding me for the whole 1 year. My retina professors have motivated me to learn more and give me a chance to join the conference outside Seoul city which is really a great experience for me during staying here. And they also allowed me to join the animal lab which we don’t have in Cambodia yet. Without their help and effort, I really can’t experience what I experienced today. 7)Please describe a special/troublesome experience you went through because of COVID19 during your fellowship. The very first experience was the isolation once I arrived in Korea which I had to quarantine for 14 days and take 2 covid tests. One taken within 24 hours my arrival time and other one taken when my quarantine ended. And during my training, I remembered one time in the morning, before I get into operation room, I was told that one of our OPD patient that we had seen yesterday got infected with Covid 19 so that I had to take covid test. So, on that day I could not get to join the operation room. And during my holiday I had a plan to do drifting in the province, but I could only join if I tested the covid with negative result within 24 hours. So, I took another covid test. And another experienced happened on one of my holidays, I went to visit a family and we had lunch together. And I was told the next day that 2 of them were infected with covid so I had to do another test again.

1) Please introduce yourself. I am Claudio Sampieri, 31 years old. My family lives in Italy: My mother is a pediatrician and my father is a radiologist. My sister is a medical student. 2) Where is your working place back in your country and what is your specialty? I am a doctor specialized in Otolaryngology in Italy. I started this fellowship program after completing my residency at the University of Genova under the mentorship of Prof. Giorgio Peretti. 3) How did you get to know Severance? Why did you choose Severance as your training hospital? I got to know about the Severance hospital department of Otolaryngology and head and neck surgery from a lecture of Prof. Se Heon Kim I could attend remotely during my residency. At that time, I was impressed by the contents of his presentation robotic surgery procedures. While I was looking for information on this department, I got in contact with a previous fellow who enthusiastically suggested me the fellowship program and therefore I applied as an international fellow in head and neck surgery. 4) How long is your training period in Korea? My fellowship period will last 1 year. 5) Which area did you focus on during your fellowship at Severance? Since the early years of my residency, my growing interest in oncological patients has led me to focus on head and neck surgery, either on a research and a surgical dimension. The head and neck surgery deals with lesions and tumors of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, salivary glands, thyroid, and the skin of the head and neck. 6) What is the most impressive feature of Severance Hospital? Severance hospital is a cutting-edge medical center providing the highest quality care in many disciplines. The hospital itself is really modern and every service is very efficient and aimed at patients' satisfaction. On the other side, doctors are provided with the best tools to fulfill their role encompassing a very efficient organization and planning thanks to nurses and secretaries, a very proficient electronic medical record system, and the best tools for patients' examination and surgical operations. I was impressed by the technological incorporation in many tasks and by the Severance personnel's discipline and dedication. 7) What are the specific contents of your fellowship program at Severance? The oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx are important sites for fundamental functions such as speaking and swallowing; moreover, the head and neck is a very delicate part for cosmetics. Ablative surgery in these areas can have and severe impact on the quality of life of patients. My interest in minimally invasive surgery, especially robotic transoral surgery, in order to reduce this impact, led me to choose this fellowship. Professor Se Heon Kim and Professor Koh are internationally-known leaders in this field, and it is a privilege for me to learn from them. Nevertheless, I'm also focusing on all the fields of this wide discipline, especially open neck surgery and laryngomicrosurgery. 8) What was your first impression of Korea? South Korea is exceptional in its culture and heritage. Being surrounded by this distinctive ancient culture together with the cutting-edge modernity that distinguishes Seoul was a unique experience. The country is incredibly tidy, efficient, and safe and this makes South Korea particularly easy to adapt and living for a foreigner. I was particularly impressed by how Korean people are holding their unique personality of respect, honesty, dedication to success, and family values. 9) What is the best memory so far during your stay here? I was lucky enough to meet many international fellows attending other disciplines in Severance Hospital. The cultural and personal exchanges with these people coming from many countries enriched my experience beyond the simple medical formation. I have built very strong bonds with several of them, forging those which I am sure are meant to be long-lasting friendships. 10) Who are you most thankful for at Severance (who helped you the most) & why? I have first to thank Prof. Se Heon Kim for leading my training here. Moreover, I am especially grateful for having the chance to learn from all the professors of the head and neck department. Prof. Dahee Kim was a mentor for me inside and outside the operation room; she never stopped teaching me and always backed me up when I faced difficulties. Prof. Young Min Park who, even from Gangnam severance, was a constant support during my training and particularly encouraged me through this path, involving me in clinical research. Prof. Hong for his enthusiasm in teaching to us fellows, Prof. Sim for his support and his help and Prof. Koh. I also want to thank my fellowship colleague Kyuin Lee for his friendship, and all the residents, nurses and professional assistants that welcomed me from the very beginning and helped me in many ways. A special thanks to the international office personnel Ms. Seunghyun Lee and Ms. Soobin Park. 11) If you were to get the chance to come back, which field of clinical study would you like to focus on? I am very enthusiastic about head and neck surgery but I feel also the need to learn how to perform reconstruction after the ablation surgery so in the future I would also like to focus on reconstructive surgery of the head and neck area. 12)Please describe a special/troublesome experience you went through because of COVID19 during your fellowship. Unfortunately, I happened to start my fellowship during this particular historical period characterized by the COVID19 pandemic. When I arrived in the country, the government was taking very strong decisions to contrast the infection and therefore these first 6 months of my experience in Korea have been burdened by early night curfew and gathering restrictions which somehow did not allow me to fully exploit the life outside the hospital. Anyway, we are in front of a turning point in this pandemic and hopefully, life will soon come back to a more normal way!

In cases of suspected exposure or contact of working personnel with a COVID-19 positive patient, there was an appropriate control and care, protecting their health and limiting the expected transmission if any. COVID-19 was the reason for some limitations in social activities and people gathering. I could have seen more of Korean culture, attended events and explored more places if it was not for COVID-19.
