Severance Rehabilitation Hospital was established by consolidating the ‘Orthotic and Prosthetic Unit’ which was established on April 23, 1953 and the ‘Pediatric Rehabilitation Center’ which was established in March, 1963 and came into operation as the first university hospital rehabilitation center in Korea. On May 8, 1987, it opened the first rehabilitation hospital with the capacity of 145 beds, which has been expanded into 164 beds in a building that is 10 stories high and has one basement level.
Now, Severance Rehabilitation Hospital is preparing the takeoff to be “the First, the Best, and the Most Innovative Hospital”. It is making a new start by suggesting and developing a new paradigm of rehabilitation such as rehabilitation for minimizing disability, preventing aggravation of disability by aging of people with pre-existing disabilities, rehabilitation for the elderly in the aging society whose chance of disability is getting higher.
To achieve this vision, the Severance Rehabilitation Hospital have set up the following goals:

3. Train and educate highly skilled manpower
4. Support consultation and referral between physicians
5. Pursue globalization of the hospital

The history of modern medicine in Korea started 136 years ago by the founders of Severance Hospital. As medical missionaries, they were committed to teaching and training Koreans, making a way for them to become doctors. Today, we continue to keep their founding spirit alive with our tireless efforts to support international doctors training in Severance and promote the spirit of sharing and giving through medicine.
As the scripture says ‘do not be weary in doing what is right’, all staff members will do what is right, what is good and make utmost efforts to make a best hospital.
