1) Please introduce yourself. Dr. Gopal Kumar, 41 year old/Male. My wife is also a medicine specialist and works for the Delhi government. I have one 6 year old kid along with parents and elder brother. 2) Where is your working place back in your country and what is your specialty? I work at a tertiary healthcare center named “ Medanta -The Medicity," a 1,600 bedded MultiSuper speciality hospital started by a famous cardiac surgeon, Dr. Naresh Trehan, located in Gurgaon Delhi-NCR. After completing my MS in otorhinolaryngology and fellowship in Head and Neck Oncosurgery, I have been practicing exclusively Head and Neck Surgery and Oncosurgery since then. 3) How did you get to know Severance? Why did you choose Severance as your training hospital? Severance is one of the best ranked hospital in South Korea and doesn’t need an introduction. Have witnessed Prof. Yoon Woo Koh lectures and live Robotic surgical procedures in International conferences. He can be coined as the instigator of Robotic head and Neck Surgery with more than 1,500 head and neck cases and getting a training under him was my priority. Severance has one of the biggest Minimal invasive and Robotic surgical/training center in the world and it took years for me to get an offer for the training program. 4) How long is your training period in Korea? My training period is for 6 months duration from November 2019 - April 2020. 5) Which area did you focus on during your fellowship at Severance? Who is your supervisor? My fellowship was in Robotic Head and Neck surgery and in this 6 months I have been a part of approximately 200 robotic head and neck surgery cases performed by Prof. S.H.Kim and Prof Yoon Woo Koh. Apart from Robotic I also gained experience on the different open cases in Head and Neck department. 6) What is the most impressive feature of Severance Hospital? Severance as such is a very impressive hospital. It has a cutting-edge technology and an outstanding feature where it is adapting to the rapid automation advancement and integrating modern technology in every aspect of health. State of the art equipment, world class facilities, experienced doctors and staff are the pillars which give severance the most defining outlook. It provides one of the best learning environments for the doctors of all stream and age group. It is very impressive to see how it empowers the patient by giving them access to all the necessary information and care from patient data management to surgical procedures. 7) What are the specific contents of your fellowship program at Severance? I have been working in the specialty of Head and neck Oncology for the last 10 years at a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi, India. To widen my horizon, I wanted to pursue head and neck Robotic surgery which is still in the gestation phase in many parts of the world. My acceptance here as a fellow at the Minimal Invasive and Robotic center in head and neck was like breaking through the glass ceiling. My fellowship included managing head and neck lesions both benign and malignant by Robotic surgery. Its implication, outcome and comparison with the conventional open surgery for a similar procedure were also reviewed. Observing patient workup in the outpatient clinic, pre op preparations, post op management, dealing with per op complication if any and follow up was also a part of the fellowship. Apart from this it also included attending tumor board meeting with other faculties and department, weekly classes, paper presentations, CME, lectures, conferences, simulator and cadaveric courses. 8) If you were to get the chance to come back, which field of clinical study would you like to focus on? If I do get an opportunity to come back, I would like to focus my research on artificial intelligence in the field of surgery. How we can develop new technology to articulate telesurgery like teleconferencing, where we can perform surgery through Robot on any patient in other part of the same country or intercontinental without moving physically that can lead to severe cost cutting and benefit patient by being operated by doctors who are best in their field at their own hospital equipped with facility. Development of new dye or marker which can light up on immunofluorescence during surgery and we can revise the margin per op only if needed. Devices with sensors which can notify the surgeons when working close to the nerve or vessels or can mark the cancer cell. Research on genomic profiling to gain more thorough understanding of the molecular abnormalities of head and neck cancers, further helping to guide the development of new therapeutics and early detection of cancers. 9) What was your first impression of Korea? Being an Indian the “Atithi Devo Bhava“ mantra is in our blood but the concept of going out of the way to treat guest with reverence was felt in Korean culture too. Truly speaking although this was my second visit to Korea but I have truly experienced the hospitality and warmth during my time at Severance. People at the work place are quite friendly and open but general public are a bit reserved. English being the last chosen language make things hard for the international people but google translations make it doable. “Made in Korea” concept is a lesson for many others to learn. I found the accommodation expensive while food is affordable and delicious especially the Korean BBQ. Transportation after 12 AM in the midnight is difficult like at our place but Seoul is super safe any time of the night or day. People literally go out of the way to help you. Korea has carried the tag of developed nation very well. The effect of acculturation is clearly visible. I owe you Seoul. 10) What is the best memory so far during your stay here? My stay at Severance and Korea served both the purpose of work and play. Meeting different trainees from different parts of the world, bonding with them, knowing about the advancement in the field of medicine or surgery, about their culture and preferences in such a short span of time was commendable. It provided an intellectual basis for a comprehensive understanding of different continental traditions. Sharing the same working space, dinning table, evening walk, street shopping, visit to the museum and planning for the future or life after fellowship with the fellow mates will always be treasured and remain close to the heart. Something which will be cherished silently for a long period of time. My bond with this place and its people will always be revered. 11) What are your thoughts and feelings about the way Korea is dealing with COVID-19, and what is the situation like in your home country? When the Covid phobia started in February a sense of fear prevailed for the time being the number were increasing. There was concern for my well being at my home also and all the advice to be back came pouring. Instinct always said Korea will deal with the situation head on and the “3T” mantra of Korea worked well with complete control of the outbreak within two months and things returning to normalcy without hiccups. While the whole world is still struggling to find a way out of this mess Korea has emerged victorious without any lockdowns, travel bans or confinement. The hospital work continued non stop and there as no reduction in the number of cases. The doctors who are the real fighters in this war along with the administration and the civilized and obedient nature of the people helped Korea win this war and set an example for others. India is a huge country with dense population and our government and people have enacted proactively to contain the mortality to less than 3%. Total numbers of cases has touched 50k and our doctors are working day and night to give the best treatment possible to the concerned. Presently the third phase of lockdown is going on but hopefully very soon our borders and airspace will open up. I am looking forward to go back to my country to implement what I have learned here. 12) Who are you most thankful for at Severance (who helped you the most) & why? Severance is a great place because there is always someone to help you out. It will not be appropriate to name only one person in this journey of 6 months but I spent almost whole of the time with my Prof. Yoon Woo Koh in the operating room or in the outpatient clinic. Thank you very much for the course, I enjoyed every minute of your console time as well as your marvelous sense of humor. You are always very kind, helpful and truly care about the trainee problems. Your zero tolerance attitude during surgery taught me to become more disciplined. Thank you for all your encouragement and I want you to know you made a meaningful impact on my profession. Head and neck team as a whole comprising Prof. Eun Chang Choi, Chairman and Prof. Se-Heon Kim, Cinical Asst Prof. Park, Clinical Asst Prof.Da Hee and Prof. Gil Chae Lim for your dedication, organization, enthusiasm and hard work that makes your department stand apart from rest of all. Ms Seunghyun Lee from Severance Academy and Ms Suyeon Choi from minimal invasive center for all the helpful communication which made things easier and smoother. Kamsahamnida

1) Please introduce yourself. My name is Lascu Ana, 41years old, and I have 3 family members. 2) Where is your working place back in your country and what is your specialty? University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Victor Babes" Timisoara, Romania and Medical Clinic University Assistant, MD, PhD Cardiac Surgery Specialist, Vascular Surgery Specialist 3) How did you get to know Severance? Why did you choose Severance as your training hospital? I heard about this hospital in a training that I did in the Florida, USA, where I had the opportunity to get acquainted with a famous cardiovascular surgeon who came from here, Dr Peter Chung. I decided to come here for a hands-on training in cardiovascular surgery. 4) How long is your training period in Korea? My training period in Korea is for one year. 5) Which area did you focus on during your fellowship at Severance? Who is your supervisor? I am training as a fellow in the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery. Supervisor: Prof. Youn,Young- Nam, Prof . Lee, Seunghyun, Dr. Shin, Yu Rim 6) What is the most impressive feature of Severance Hospital? I think that the main characteristic of Severance Hospital are the people who work, activate and are part of this "miniature city" where order is the defining element. The attitude of the people, also here I think that culture also intervenes, determines you to live carefully, imposes respect on you but also gives you the feeling that you are respected, you are important. Returning to people without whom the imposing buildings would be just lifeless museums, you can not ignore the dedication and desire to help, to be of benefit to those around you, to help the patient and make it easier for him to overcome his suffering. I think it can be said that altruism can be another characteristic of the people here. 7) What are the specific contents of your fellowship program at Severance? My training program at Severance Hospital is outlined in my specialty. I am a cardiac and vascular surgeon and I came for this program from Romania, Europe. I am interested in the cardiovascular surgical pathology of both adults and children. In adult cardiovascular surgery, we can talk about: valvular pathology (either repair or replacement), coronary heart disease - cardiovascular bypass, aortic disease (supra and infrarenal). Heart valve disease (Aortic valve surgery and transcatheter valve surgery, Mitral valve repair, Complex aortic root surgery). I came with the desire to improve my surgical practice, to do hands-on in the operating room of the cardiovascular surgery department. The specific contents of my fellowship program contains: Heart valve disease (Aortic valve surgery and transcatheter valve surgery, Mitral valve repair, Complex aortic root surgery), arrhythmia surgery, minimally invasive heart surgery, aortic disease, peripheral vascular disease, coronary artery bypass surgery, end-stage heart failure, left ventricular assist device, Thoracic and abdomimal aortic aneurysms, Aortic dissection, Arterial Traumatic pathology, Congenital heart disease, adult congenital heart disease, pediatric heart failure, Heart transplant. 8) If you were to get the chance to come back, which field of clinical study would you like to focus on? Of course the answer to this question is quite simple and concise. Yes, I would return to my specialty that covers a vast pathology. I believe that the evolution of surgical procedures will be highlighted in the future and at the same time, I believe that every case I have seen in Severance helps me enrich my clinical experience. I would return to cardiovascular surgery in the situation where I could do hands-on, knowing that direct involvement, effective practice can bring a benefit, especially since we are talking about a surgical branch and in this case about one of the top surgeries. I am sure that the hospital, and the cardiovascular surgery department in particular, through the team it has and with the openness they prove will be able to carry on the classic and safe standard they prove (which they have), but also to implement any procedure that would bring a plus, a benefit to the patient. 9) What was your first impression of Korea? Although I had the opportunity to travel to various parts of the globe, I waited impatiently and at the same time looked forward to my trip to Korea, "The Land of Quiet Mornings." Upon arrival in South Korea the first impression was positive. The largest Incheon International airport located 48km west of Seoul is a huge, grand, very clean and extremely well organized. The civilization, respect, culture here are some things besides which you cannot pass without noticing them. You can't help but be impressed by the grandeur of the environment, countless imposing / grand parks, green lawn and the multitude of colorful and perfectly arranged flowers, which all inspire your life. Optimism, but also a continuous work, maybe sometimes hard, are specifically notable in South Korean population. As for the South Korean gastronomy, there would be countless to discuss, from the multitude of bowls, as well as the traditional products, their preparation, are strongly noticed in daily life. To conclude, I would say that everything works with a characteristic speed, a fast pace, everything unfolds quickly. 10) What is the best memory so far during your stay here? It is quite difficult to limit it to one thing: besides the activity within the hospital, which I can categorize as an exceptional one, made with passion and dedication by everyone, without lacking competence and rigor in the procedure; I could mention part of some visits to Seoul considered the second metropolis in the world. About Seoul I would say that it is a huge urban agglomeration, a mixture between tradition and contemporaneity. Korea has taken over the technology of the West but has maintained its ethics and tradition. I can say that it is a real cultural expedition, where you can feel how the differences do not raise barriers between people, enrich the daily life, so it can be said that you see best how unity combines in diversity. I must point out, which is already known, easy to see at the hospital level, that Korea is one of the most advanced countries in the world in the field of IT. No matter where it is, there are no people without the phone in hand. A beautiful memory is the location given by Yeouido Hangang Park on the banks of the Han River, also known as the Park of Colors. You can enjoy a true splendor of color in spring, being a very appreciated season due to the blossoming of cherries, a true spectacle of nature. I can't help but remember the representative places and monuments inscribed in the UNESCO world heritage such as: Gyeongbokung Royal Palace, Bukchon Hanok traditional village, Korea National Folklore Museum next to the Royal Palace. In my opinion, I think that a special place is occupied by the “N. Seoul Tower ” located on top of Mount Namsan which offers an extraordinary panorama of the city and its surroundings, an excellent way to get to see and know the capital Seoul. 11) What are your thoughts and feelings about the way Korea is dealing with COVID-19, and what is the situation like in your home country? Personally, I believe that responsible behavior is not an effort and does not require many resources, but above all, let us not forget that South Koreans are a disciplined people. In my country, not being there, I don't know exactly what the situation is. What I can say is that we face a greater number of cases than in South Korea. Certainly the lack of economic resources, which are not comparable to those in South Korea, is something that can generate a minus in the acquisition of the necessary resources and also in the evolution of cases. We must also remember the cultural difference that speaks for itself. I would limit myself to a simple example of wearing a mask, which is not a problem for South Koreans, there is no need for explanations in this regard, compared to Europe and in particular speaking of the country where they come from, where this is difficult to implement. Anyway, for everyone I think it was and is a different and difficult period. On top of all this, I hope that the situation with COVID 19 will have a favorable slope, in order to be able to continue the daily activity in normal parameters. 12) Who are you most thankful for at Severance (who helped you the most) & why? I am grateful to those people with whom I have interacted: professors, doctors, fellow, residents, physician assistants, nurses, secretaries; but especially to those who had the courage and confidence to work with a person foreign to their country and culture, being forced to communicate in another language. Those who allowed me to be actually be part of the surgical team with them and were also open to discussing therapeutic and surgical conduct. I am grateful to the surgical team in the cardiovascular department: Prof. Kyung-Jong Yoo, Prof. Young-Nam Youn, Prof. Sak Lee, Prof. Hyun-Chul Joo, Prof. Jung -Hwan Kim, Prof. You-Rim Shin, who accepted me in clinic. Also to the anesthesia department headed by Prof Young Ran Kwak, a kind, communicative person with a clinical experience you can't get over or ignore. A special place has Prof. Young Hwan Park, a true doctor and teacher who knows how to pass on the secrets of congenital surgery to younger generations, who combines the rapidity of surgery with the patience to explain, giving you the opportunity to practice and then explaining what you need to improve, so that the result is good, effective procedure for the patient and the surgeon. If I were to make a comparison with a word from the country where I come from, I would say: that time has not passed in vain over him, he did not gain experience only for himself, but he is willing to be one who always stays active with what he leaves behind (on the principle that the student is better than his mentor). I would also like to mention the fact that since the beginning of my period here in Severance Hospital Prof. Seung-Hyun Lee was open, both for medical discussions (therapeutic, surgical conduct as well as the classic procedure or the openness he has for the implementation of new techniques), but at the same time he showed his availability for the administrative part, which made my integration easier, as a foreign person in the team of this hospital. I really appreciate this hospitality and kindness and even the time allotted despite the countless activities he undertakes. I would also like to mention other names and also to thank them for showing the desire for interaction and kindness (specifying that I cannot name them all): from the echocardiography department Prof. Geu Ru Hong, Prof. Ji Young Shim; from the department of interventional cardiology Prof. Chulmin Ahn, Prof. Jung sun Kim; from the thoracic surgery department Prof Paik, and also Prof Kim Young Tae for his support and kindness. I do not want to end without mentioning those from Avison International Fellowship, who have been an important help and support for me: Dr. Chin Yong Pak, Dr. Choi Paul, Mr. Kang, Sarah, Jane. Also May I want to thanks Severance Academy: in special Park SooBin and Lee Seunghyun for their help. In conclusion, for all the kindness, goodwill/benevolence and openness of all, I think that the words are superfluous and even insufficient to say: Kamsahamnida! Thank you! Multumesc! I wish them all to have everything that is best for them, their families and in the activity that each has. May God watch over and help each one.

1) Please introduce yourself. My name is GODLOVE PETER MFUKO. I am 41 years old. I am married to MWANAMVUA GUGU (38) and we are blessed with four (4) wonderful children; CHELSEA, a girl (DOB – 2007.05.10), CASH, a boy (DOB – 2014.05.10), MIA, a girl (DOB – 2016.02.12) and THOMAS KING, a boy (DOB – 2017.03.10). MWANAMVUA is also a medical doctor but not practicing since early 2016, due to the short inter-pregnancy interval between our last ‘Irish twins’, MIA and THOMAS, so that she could take good care of them! Therefore, I am currently the sole bread earner of the family and I am super comfortable with it! 2) Where is your working place back in your country and what is your specialty? I am employed by the Muhimbili National Hospital, the provider of the highest level of health care in Tanzania and the teaching hospital for Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (the oldest and the top notch public medical university in the country). The Hospital and the University are both located in Dar es salaam, the major commercial city of Tanzania. I am an Otorhinolaryngologist and a Clinical Lecturer. 3) How did you get to know Severance? Why did you choose Severance as your training hospital? I knew Severance through a few doctors in my country who enjoyed variable stints in the recent past as international fellows here. Choosing Severance as my training hospital was inspired by PROF. SEUNG KON HUH, a retired Neurosurgeon and Professor Emeritus of Yonsei University College of Medicine, who currently works as a coach and mentor for young neurosurgeons in Tanzania. Professor Huh is also a Dr. Avison Missionary in Africa particularly in Tanzania. 4) How long do you stay in Korea? My tenure here was scheduled from 2020.01.02 to 2020.06.30. 5) Which area did you focus on during your fellowship at Severance? I basically focused on Neurotology (Dizziness, Vertigo and Neurology of Balance) and also spent an appreciable amount of time in Otology and Cranial Base Surgery. 6) What was most impressive at Severance Hospital? The most impressive feature of Severance Hospital that caught my attention are the state-of-the-art equipment, an incredibly well-organized system, and most importantly how everyone here shows great attention to detail in everything they do. Among other things, the adoption of the medical culture that is focused on customers makes Severance Hospital to deservedly claim the accolades of being one of the World’s leading center of excellence in modern and comprehensive medical care inspired by the practice of the love of God. 7) What are the specific contents of your fellowship at Severance? Specific contents of my fellowship program here at Severance are; weekly tutorials in neurotology with my professor (Mondays), Outpatient clinics (Tuesdays and Thursdays), weekly audiology and equilibrium lab work (mainly Thursdays), surgical placement in OR - observing major and minor surgeries for neurotology, otology and skull base (throughout the week), weekly attendance in morning clinical meetings (Neurotology on Tuesdays, Cochlear Implantation on Wednesdays, and Vestibular on Fridays) and participating in various workshops, courses, seminars, and conferences. Besides, I was also honored to participate in several case reports submitted for publication in the Otology and Neurotology Journal by my co-supervisor PROF. IN SEOK MOON. 8) If you could come back to Severance, which area would you like to study more? I would still focus on Neurotology. Severance Hospital has put in place a comprehensive system of care that is tremendous to say the least. The Audio-Vestibular testing equipment; The Rotary Chair System, the Equitest Posturography System, the Calorics, the VEMPs, the VNG, the EcoG, the ABR and OAEs to mention but a few, are simply perfect and world-class in the diagnosis, management and follow up of patients with neurotological conditions. I will be the very first Neurotologist in my country upon completion of my fellowship training. It goes without saying that a chance of coming back here to sharpen my skills in the near future is something I cannot afford to lose. 9) Who are you most thankful to at Severance and why? The one person whom I am indebted to for his sincere assistance and constant support during my whole period of training here is none other than my professor and supervisor, PROF. SUNG HUHN KIM of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Yonsei University College of Medicine. Professor Kim would welcome questions, suggestions and opinions regarding my training in the most amicable way possible and never did he pretend to know it all. Not to mention the many occasions that he had invited me to explore some serious Korean delicacies for dinner! If I am to sum him up in one sentence, I would say that professor Kim is the smartest high volume Neurotologist and yet the coolest person of his caliber I have ever met in my career so far! 10) What was your first impression of Korea? In all honesty, my initial impression of Korea was totally different from what I had anticipated before coming and what really shocked me was the attitude of the people! Never before have I visited a society of people with such warmness and sincerity. I encountered a lot of difficulties, and still do, on the issue of language barrier since Koreans can hardly speak English, or to put it plainly, majority cannot speak English, but I consider this drawback negligible given how good and respectful Korean people are. I have read about ‘noonchi’ and wish that this ‘Korean version of emotional intelligence’ would be benchmarked by the people of all nations! 11) What was the best memory during your stay in Korea? Apart from the training, work and learning environment that was simply amazing and superb, the best memory so far during my stay here is obviously the people’s positive attitude especially in their faithful adherence to the practice of respect not only to the traditional ‘parent, teacher, and king’ but also to everyone regardless of their social class, race, gender or age. Moreover, I will always miss the Korean barbecue, the ‘gogi-gui’; the cuisine method of grilling meat on gas or charcoal grills inlaid into the dining table itself! 12) What are your thoughts and feelings about the way Korea is dealing with COVID-19, and what is the situation like in your home country? I think South Korea has displayed an unprecedentedly aggressive and yet non-draconian approach towards COVID-19 since the surge of cases in the city of Daegu in late February. My thoughts are, firstly, the attitude of the people especially in adhering to the social distancing measures and South Korea’s strategy of ‘test-trace-and-treat’ helped a lot. Secondly, South Korea has one of the best Health Insurance Systems in the World that covers everyone. The extensive testing including the ‘drive-through’ testing centers was/is key to South Korea’s low community transmission and case fatality rates. In my home country, Tanzania, the Government through the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, has put in place deliberate measures to curb the transmission since the first reported case of covid-19 in mid-March. The major challenge so far is the inadequacy of medicines, medical equipment and medical supplies including face masks, sanitizers and PPEs for frontline healthcare workers. Intensive care facilities and ventilators are also scarce. Factors like a weaker economy and people’s insight and attitude towards COVID-19 contribute a lot to the ailing situation in my home country.

The big event for my family was the birth of my son Suleman in Seoul, August 2019. I was happy to be part of 2 publications in top Dermatology journals, all thanks to my supervisor and colleagues. The staffs in the Department of Dermatology were very kind and supportive. I spent many enjoyable moments with the department during my stay in Korea, which made me happy. We had many scientific events and dinners together. I will always remember the kindness and generosity of my professors.
