Severance International Fellowship (SIF)

Severance International Fellowship (SIF) is open to foreign physicians, dentists, nurses, medical technicians, or hospital administrators who wish to experience clinical care, operative procedures, and participate in research activities at Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea. This program builds on the hospital’s long legacy and mission to educate future clinical leaders in healthcare and ultimately reducing health inequalities in the global society.

Common Requirements

  1. All foreign trainees have to be eligible to enter Korea without violating Article 11(Prohibition, etc. of Entry) of the Immigration Act of the Republic of Korea.

  2. All foreign trainees have to be enough fluent in English or Korean to participate in the training. Trainees have to be not only able to do daily conversation, but also have to understand and be able to listen, read, write, and speak about their professional specialty area in English or Korean. Severance Academy might request official proof of the trainee's language proficiency if necessary. Interpretations are NOT available.

  3. All foreign trainees have to be registered as trainees in Severance Academy, mainly by applying online at this homepage. (Email applications are not recommended.)

  4. All foreign trainees have to submit a immunization form that asks for proof of vaccination or antibody test results for specific diseases designated by Severance Hospital. Please download the form here.

The goal of the Aorta and Vascular Center at Gangnam Severance Hospital is to apply new technologies with sound clinical judgment. We explore the integration of a variety of minimally invasive cardiovascular therapies–such as catheter-based therapies and image-guided therapies–with traditional open surgery to provide the best possible treatment for the patient. Our knowledge of diseases, experience with traditional treatment options and access to cutting-edge modalities distinguish us from other cardiovascular interventionalists. In an average year, we do perform more than 400 aortic surgeries and interventions and more than 400 vascular surgeries and interventions. We see more than 8000 outpatients and care for approximately 1500 patients with aorta and vascular disease in the hospital. The center is organized into divisions that encompass all areas of aorta and vascular field. The programmatic design of the practice allows vertical and horizontal integration of patient care, translational and clinical research, quality improvement, and education. This ultimately translates into continuously improving patient care utilizing cutting edge techniques with state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and therapeutic methods. Teams of physicians and allied health care professionals with comprehensive expertise and experience in all aorta & vascular diseases provide both inpatient and outpatient care. We collaborate with nurse practitioners, physician assistants and technicians to push the boundaries of medical knowledge and provide the optimal integrated care for our patients. Fellows maintain a critical role in the practice and obtain robust outpatient and inpatient experience partnering with faculty leaders in the field.

Aorta and Vascular Surgery Training

The Aorta and Vascular Center Fellowship Program at Gangnam Severance Hospital prepares vascular surgeons for their future in providing the highest quality surgical care. The 3/6/12 months program allows them to gain experience in personalized and comprehensive treatment.
 
Our mission is to develop academic clinical surgeons who will continue this mission. With nationally recognized director, the program offers the educational resources to develop proficiency in diagnosing and treating diseases of the aortic and arterial venous systems. The program also provides the clinical educational experience for the fellows to excel in multidisciplinary communication and professionalism.
 
Fellows in the Aorta and Vascular Center training program gain a broad base of knowledge and skills in all aspects of aorta and vascular surgery, including preoperative, operative and postoperative care of patients with a high volume and balanced experience of open and endovascular cases:


  • · Emphasis on complex interventions

· Comprehensive exposure to ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging

  1. · Complete experience in the management of inpatients and outpatients

The program offers ample opportunity for fellows to conduct, present and publish clinical research. Faculty mentors are available to guide these efforts.
 
Upon completion of the program, fellows will be proficient and knowledgeable in the indications and technical skills to perform procedures requiring traditional open and catheter based technology and will be prepared to enter an academic position in aorta and vascular surgery and intervention.

All participants of our SIF program will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the training. The certificate will be issued by the President & CEO of Yonsei University Health System.

Severance Academy operates various SNS or online communities, where you can communicate freely with other international trainees who were in Severance before or will be training soon. You can get help from other physicians or medical staffs before you come to Korea and get some useful tips including their training experience, accommodations, good restaurants near the hospital etc. We will also update the newest news of Severance regularly at this homepage. Severance Academy will also host offline gatherings exclusive for international trainees, or invite you to official events hosted by Severance Hospital or governement institutions.
